Project Title: Study of the Expression and Regulation of Nitric Oxide Synthase for Mechanistic Elucidation and Therapeutic Control of Inflammatory and Neuro-Degenerative Diseases related to its Over-Expression
Abstract of Project :
Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) is an enzyme that controls many vital physiological functions in our body through its bio-active product, nitric oxide. However, abnormal expression of this enzyme leads to several inflammatory & neuro-degenerative diseases. My major research goal is to elucidate the major factors controlling NOS expression & activity & devise effective therapeutic means to control them. I will examine the structure-function relationship of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) with respect to the factors responsible for its assembly into its active dimeric form as well as devise selective therapeutic intervention(s) of iNOS activity using clinically efficacious dimerization inhibitors for the control of the various neuro-degenerative, infectious and inflammatory diseases implicated with over-expression of this enzyme. We have already developed novel compounds that have the potential to act as non–toxic and highly selective inhibitors for iNOS that can serve as clinical as well as diagnostic tools for controlling and evaluating the progression of such diseases respectively.
